Your opinion – polarized sunglasses?

I just bought a pair of sunglasses, but wondering if I should have shelled out the extra $$ to buy a pair that’s polarized. I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth it for me. I usually just wear my glasses when driving, and generally when I’m outdoors (like walking or lounging, not fishing, or golfing). What’s your opinion? Do I need polarized sunglasses? Will it harm my eyes if I don’t have them?

Thanks :)

Just as in all things, polarized sunglasses have both positives and negatives.

Positive:

Dramatically reduce reflections and glare coming from HORIZONTAL surfaces. (They will not decrease glare from water vapor or haze in the air any more than regular sunglasses because the glare from this is diffuse not polarized by a horizontal surface.) This helps with water, windshields, etc.

Negative:

Polarization is significantly more expensive than standard tinting. Polarized sunglasses can actually prevent you from seeing LED numbers on gas pump readouts unless you tilt your head to the right or left since the LED readout is polarized. You will also see a checker board type of pattern when looking at tempered glass such as car windshields or tempered glass in doors or windows.

You will not harm your eyes by wearing standard tinted lenses. Polarization is a specialty technology that works very well for special situations. But, it is my opinion that unless you have these special environmental needs the benefits of polarization are not worth the expense. So, I would highly recommend them for fishing, etc. but for day to day average use, a standard tint is probably more practical.
